adhan

Definition

The call to prayer, which consisted originally of simply four takbīrs followed by the statement (أَشْهَدُ أَنْ) لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا ٱلله ((ʔašhadu ʔan) lā ʔilāha ʔillā llāh).

Etymology

Borrowed from Arabic أَذَان (ʔaḏān).

Example Sentences

• "If one were to pray alone and cannot hear the adhan from a nearby mosque, then giving both the adhan and iqamah is Sunnah (recommended)."
