Definition

The high-pitched bark of a small dog, or similar.

Etymology

Probably of imitative origin. Alternatively, from dialectal yap, yaup, yalp (“to yap, yelp”), from Middle English ȝælpen, variant of yelpen (“to yelp”). More at yelp.
