Definition

A member of a fictional, primitive race of teddy-bear-like creatures.

Etymology

Coined by American filmmaker George Lucas in 1983 from the syllabic reverse of Wookiee. The name first appeared in the end titles of the film Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi.
