The first letter of the Proto-Canaanite alphabet, and its descendants in descended Semitic scripts, such as Phoenician 饜 (示, 示aleph), Aramaic 饜 (示), Classical Syriac 軔 ('膩laph), Hebrew 讗 (aleph) and Arabic 丕 (示alif).

Etymology

Borrowed from Hebrew 讗诇祝 (谩lef). Doublet of alpha and alif.
